The Normandy of Rollon becomes reality again on 1st of January 2016 !
After more than two centuries of warrior raids of the Vikings, these are well established along the Normandy coast and offer a solid and constant resistance to the armies of the King of France. In 911, then intervenes in Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, a treaty between the leader of the Vikings Hrolf and Charles III said Simple. Hrolf will become Rollon in the History of France, from his baptismal name: accepted to be baptized was a condition of the original Treaty. Indeed, the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte stipulates that Neustria which covers more or less the borders of the current reunified Normandy becomes Duchy of Normandy on the condition of supporting the King of the Franks.
Even though there were ups and downs in this deal, the "former" Vikings have always supported the King of the Franks, even providing him with decisive support in some of the major stakes battles for the continent, their art of war never denied.
You will find here traced, some episodes of this Viking ascent.
The Vikings did not just loot Normandy !
But if the Vikings got a piece of land officially (then Neustria or Normandy today), this does not mean that only Normandy has suffered the ravages of their repeated invasions.
The Vikings also went up the Loire like the Gironde. Their rear base during these attacks was neither more nor less than the island of Her, better known under the name of Noirmoutier (named after a disappeared monastery, burned by them).
A threat identified for a long time !
Already at the time of the reign of Charlemagne (800-814), the shape of their particular boats had earned the Vikings to be spotted in the Mediterranean by the flotillas of protection of the mouths of the rivers (set up by Charlemagne himself to the light of Vikings exploits in England, but unfortunately dismantled by his own son).
